Attack Of The Crows

February 21, 2007. Today held some surprises for me. The weather still is not the greatest, but at least it wasn’t raining. The first surprise of the day came when we looked out and found the park to be deserted. So we packed up, got ready and headed over there. The second surprise came when we got to the park, there had to be over 1000 crows all sitting on the playing field. The third surprise came when Tom tried a new tactic and let me off the leash and then just let me run to my heart’s content and chase those birds. They all scattered when I charged. They may be crows, but they are a bunch of chickens, because they just fly up into the air away from me. Hey, come back and fight!

My biggest surprise of the day came when the crows decided to do just that. They came back at me in swarms. Holy cow, what have I gotten myself into? The crows looked like a formation of Japanese Zeros, making kamikaze runs, in a World War 2 movie. They dived at me from all directions. Crow off the port bow, bring guns to bear. There’s another making an attack from amidships, all anti-aircraft batteries fire. Here comes another wave, what am I going to do, I’m being overwhelmed. I better run to Tom for protection.

Finally the attack stopped and we were able to get down to some serious ball chasing. I only wandered away once to chase a couple of wayward crows, but, I came right back when Tom called. Maybe the attack of the crows has taught me a valuable lesson that it is better for me to listen. We shall see if the lesson has been absorbed or not.

Later in the afternoon we went to pick up Karl for his hockey lessons and because the weather was good, I got to go and play in the big back yard. We played fetch for at least an hour and fifteen minutes and it was great. There is no fence at the back of the yard and it leads into a bush area. At the other side is an open gate which leads to the front yard. Several times the ball landed right beside the opening and I was not tempted to go out even once. I did go down into the bush a couple of times, but, that was just to retrieve the ball when it rolled down there. I was really obedient today, even if I do say so myself, and I think Tom agrees.

It was a lot of fun playing with Karl again too and then later on I even got to visit with Tamara as well. She came to the rink to watch Karl practice hockey and to give her Dad a new portrait of her. So today was a great day all around. I proved that I can follow directions and behave when I want to. I even proved I can chase crows without disappearing and survive an attack when they fight back. I was so tired out by all the running and excitement; I fell asleep in the front seat of the truck on the way home.
