A New Maturity

March 28, 2007. Again, I have not written for several days, but that is because there has not been a lot to report for individual days. This is more a collective gathering of successes over the last little while.

The weather has been completely awful; with rain every day and not just the gentle type. Heavens opening, cats and dogs, deluges would be a more apt description. When I ran on the park, I got so wet; I would have been drier taking a bath. In fact Tom joked that he should have brought some shampoo and let the rain rinse me off.

I continue to impress Tom and Renee with my good behaviour off-leash. We again went for a walk on the trails and I spent a good portion of it walking free and obeying commands.

One thing I started awhile ago which is driving Renee and Tom crazy is that I have started to vocalize when we are driving somewhere. I do a strange sing-song type voice and then I start to bark. I rarely do this when it is just Tom and I.

Yesterday I got to meet a new dog who moved into the area recently. His name is Gus and he is a big old Malamute. He is HUGE! Around a hundred pounds and stands a good 4 inches taller than me. He is 7 years old and very friendly. We romped all over the park together and had a great time.

After we got back from breakfast, Tom and I were getting out of the truck. There was a lady walking past, who may have been one of the Chicken Wing dancers, she took one look at me and let out a scream. I looked at her like she was completely mental. Personally I think she is. I just sat down where I was and ignored her, but that piercing scream just goes right through my ears.

There was completely no reason for it. I did nothing except get out of the truck and sit on the grass. I didn’t bark, or do anything towards her. Some people!

Today we were out on the park again, our third straight day of sunshine I might add. The Chicken Wing Dancers and Helicopter Man were out in force. Several of them were talking in loud voices and I saw one or two of them point at me or Tom. Then they did something unusual. The normally walk in a circle around the wading pool, but today a couple of them broke away from the group and walked around the park.

My only thought was that they were trying to intimidate us into leaving or provoke me into doing something. I gave them no reason to do this. I stayed focused on Tom and chasing my ball. I brought the ball back to Tom and we are working on me dropping the ball and sitting. Instead of walking the perimeter of the park on the outside of the fence, they walked an inside route.

One gave up after two laps and the other kept going and attempting to get as close as she could. I completely ignored her and when she saw that this tactic was not working, she tried another and much stupider thing.

On one circuit To
m had me sitting and he walked approximately 10 feet away and had me stay. The lady as she got close deviated in her path and deliberately walked directly between Tom and me. What kind of an idiot walks between and dog and his master? Anyway, it didn’t work because I was really good and stayed right where I was.

She walked away muttering something that I could not understand, but she seemed to be upset that she was unable to provoke me. I got lots of extra pats and hugs from Tom for that I’ll tell you.
