The New Playmate

July 1, 2007. Happy Birthday Canada! Tom and I have been here just a few days now and already it feels like home. I am having so much fun taking walks off-leash (twice a day), roaming free, going in the lake, picking up sticks and visiting Perry and Teri. Now that summer seems to have arrived, I like lying in the sun on the front deck as well. Ah, it is so relaxing.

There are lots of other creatures around for me to see as well. None of them will play with me though, but, I’m not really sure about them anyway. They leave me alone and I leave them alone. I haven’t even barked at the squirrels and I understand that lots of other dogs do.

It is a sad day today though as Perry and Teri went home. Tom and I are now alone. Our closest neighbours are Karen’s family, four cabins away from us. In fact I got a surprise visit today from Karen’s dog. I think his name might be “Buddy” but I’m not sure. He came and introduced himself and then we went romping through the woods together. It was so much fun, knowing that I have a playmate nearby. We get along really well together.

I have met a few other dogs on our walks along the road, but we have not had enough time to get properly introduced. Tom went down to the beach this morning and started shoveling sand back into something he calls “Fire Island”. The pit in the centre really smells like old fire as well.

Tom still hasn’t put the boat in the water. Today is a nice day, but there are lots of clouds around still and the water is still pretty cold. Its fine for me, but Tom has to swim out to mount the anchor float for the boat and he will have to swim in from the float once the boat is on there. I guess it would be much more pleasant for him if the water was a touch warmer.

We walked past the Terry and Colleen’s place and discovered that their cabin is gone and huge swaths of trees have been taken down. This is in preparation for a new cabin to be built and just from the cleared area; it looks like it will be huge.
