The Duck Hunter

July 16, 2007. Last night I puked all over the kitchen floor. I’m not sure what caused it. I guess it could have been the water I drank out of the ditch, or maybe that old bone that I hid and ate yesterday. Could be all the grass I was chewing on, or the water I drank out of the bucket at Perry’s. Or it might just have been the heat and over-excitement of meeting up with Missy after my long walk. Whatever it was, I feel fine today.

At 7:00 AM I was lying outside the back door when I heard and noticed something down in the lake. Well, I just had to go down and investigate. I ran right out to the end of the dock and just watched. There was a mama duck and about 20 little ducklings swimming past our dock. They were so cute; I couldn’t take my eyes off of them. Then I thought I might go swimming with them, but as I started to wade into the water, they got scared and moved away very quickly.

That movement, made the noise that attracted me down there in the first place. Tom said the ducks are called “Mergansers” and that they have been there every day. Well, if they have, I have never noticed them before.

On our way back from our morning walk, we bumped into Jack and Helene who are leaving this morning but should be back in a week or so. They are Tom’s cousins who have a cabin next door to Perry and Teri.

I had a rather subdued day today, just not a lot of energy in the morning. By the afternoon, it was back in full force. I ate all the food in my bowl, so I must feel a lot better. Then I went over to supervise Teri and Perry planting some trees along the property line. They did a good job with putting the trees in so I did not have to bark out any orders. I did bark at them later when I figured they were taking an early break.

All in all, they and Tom are good workers overall and it is a pleasure having them work for me. I could use a few more employees like this. Renee will add to my workforce on Saturday and then I will audition Tom’s kids if any of them make it up here this summer.

Still no word though on when or if any of them can get time off work to join us. I am doing my best, but I know Tom has been a little lonely this year. Being sick for a couple of weeks didn’t help. He seems to be well on the road to recovery now as am I. I am having a great time and I wish that my original owner could see me now. I also wish Elly and my friends from the shelter could see me. I think Pam my trainer would be impressed as well.

Glad to hear my monk in the woods and my shaggy-haired gypsy sheepdog are doing better. Love the stories. See you soon!
