July 4, 2007. U.S. Independence Day, my old home, but I am now a fully fledged Canadian eh! Tom wasn’t feeling terribly well today, he has a slight migraine, but it didn’t stop him from taking me for my morning walk. We met a few people along the way. There was a couple who was out jogging and I got to say hello to them. There was a fellow on a bicycle, who I didn’t.
We came across a man who was standing next to the biggest thing I have laid eyes on. He was very nice and tried to pet me, but that big monster behind him scared me. Tom told me after that it is called a backhoe. I didn’t bark at it, but it sure scared me.
On the way back we met up with Barry and Joanne who were walking their dog “Nash”. In the distance Tom saw Barry hook up Nash’s leash and so he did the same. All three of them are police officers. Nash is just finishing up his training to be a fully fledged police service dog.
As we got close it was easy to see why Barry had hooked up his leash. Nash was not very nice to me at all. He was baring his teeth, barking and straining at the leash to get to me. The things he said to me in doggie talk cannot be repeated in a family Blog such as this. Suffice to say they were very unprofessional for a police officer. I guess this means we won’t be getting to be friends.
Right after that meeting, we got back to the big machine. The man was now behind the controls and it was moving around and digging up the ground. It was even more intimidating now, but for some reason I was less afraid. I still gave it a wide berth mind you, but I was not as intimidated.
It turned into a very nice summer day today. The temperature was 30 degrees C and the temperature of the lake was up to 78 degrees F. Tom blew up one of the new inner tubes and went floating in it. I kept walking into the water and trying to figure out how to get to him. I suppose I could swim, but, I’m not quite ready for it.
Instead I went for a run back and forth along the beach. I was going full out and jumping onto and then over “Fire Island”. I would race up to the dock and launch myself into the air and land in the middle. That is, until I miss-timed one jump. I came up just a little short and slammed full speed into the side of the dock. Man, did that hurt and knock the wind out of my sails. It felt like getting hit by a BC Lions linebacker. But after a very short breather I was ok and back in the game.
Tom came back in and went wading with me and he kept talking nice and calmly to me, but he could not talk me into swimming. After cooling off for awhile, we came up and I lay on the front deck and was almost completely dry within a half hour.
