Loony, Humming Friends

July 13, 2007. Happy Birthday to Tom’s Sister Beth! Its funny how after a couple of days of temperatures in the high thirties, that 22 C feels almost cold this morning. It did feel good on our walk though and considering that we went for 8K it’s a good thing.

After our walk, Tom did some tidying up around the cabin. Just organizing things and sweeping the floors. It is amazing though, with me around, it doesn’t matter how many times a day that Tom sweeps the floor, five minutes later I have dragged in half the forest floor in my fur.

Boy is it ever hot and muggy this afternoon. Tom is working up a sweat just sitting still. It’s 37C out and there is a severe thunderstorm warning in effect for later. I don’t think I’m ready for that and I think I will be hiding behind Tom later when the thunder happens.

I saw lots of different animals today. The humming birds I see all the time, but today I was sitting on the dock and a bird suddenly popped up from under the water right in front of me. Tom said it was called a loon. He just floated there and I sat watching him. He was no more than twenty feet away and didn’t seem bothered about me being there.

After a little swim in the afternoon, I wanted a boat ride and jumped into the boat. Tom took me out but the breeze was not that cooling. The air was so warm it felt like hot air from a blow dryer. It dried me off quickly though.

We met up with Barry in the middle of the lake and he and Tom were talking. I wasn’t too sure about this so, I was talking too, but I was interrupting, so nobody was too happy about it.

We continued on and as we were cruising along the shore on the other side of the lake, we saw a deer on the beach getting a drink. Tom managed to get in very close to her and I didn’t bark. She was completely unconcerned about us being there. She was very beautiful when she stood there looking around.

After we got back to the dock, I jumped out and lay down on the dock while Tom took the boat out to the mooring float. This is in case the storm really blows in hard and it will keep the boat from being pounded against the dock by the waves. I hate to say it really, but a little bit of rain right now would be kind of welcome to dampen things down a bit and cool things off as well. As long as it doesn’t go crazy and rain for a week straight or anything, then we’ll be happy.

The storm hit with a vengeance twenty minutes after we came in. The wind blew in so suddenly it was almost unexpected. Several people were caught out on the lake, but it looked like they made it in ok. The boat was bobbing around like a cork and there were trees crashing to the ground all around the area. I ran out of the cabin and was running around like a maniac barking. Tom called me into the house and shut the door and then I settled down.
