Bye, Bye, Love

July 26, 2007. It is a sad day today. I had a feeling something was different today, right from the time I woke up. Tom, Renee and I went for our usual morning walk and after breakfast, Renee brushed me some more but was paying even more attention to me than usual. The day was gorgeous and sunny and was nice and cool in the morning but turned into a scorcher later.

In the afternoon Tom put some things in the truck and I knew this meant a trip into town. Today though, I turned around and went back into the cabin and flopped down. Maybe if I don’t go, the thing I’m dreading won’t happen. Alas, it was not to be. Tom and Renee talked me into the truck and we headed off. I impressed Renee by not barking at all on the whole trip in.

When we got to town, the Greyhound bus arrived as usual, except it came from the wrong direction and it was much later than we usually see it. Then Renee patted me goodbye and gave me lots of hugs and kisses and then after hugging Tom, she got onto the bus. Renee was leaving us. This was much harder than Tom and I coming up to the lake alone and spending 3 weeks by ourselves. This was tearing part of us away. Tom shed a few tears later too.

After that was done, Tom and I went for groceries and I caused a minor stir. When Tom opened the back of the truck to put the groceries in, I climbed into the back to give him a kiss. That’s when it happened. I was noticed by several people in the lot and before you know it, we had a crowd of about 10 people around us asking questions about me.

One lady kept insisting I was a show dog and asked Tom which shows I had been entered in. He finally convinced her that I’m not for show, just a good buddy. Another lady asked if Tom was one of the owners of those Million Dollar cabins at East Lake. Tom assured her that our cabin was definitely worth a million in sentimental value, if not property cost.

Once we got back to the cabin, Tom made dinner and then we went for our evening walk. It sure is lonely here now that Renee has gone home. Glenda will be back tomorrow though and Perry on Saturday or Sunday. Caitlin and Matias join us on August 2.
