June 28, 2007. Wow! What a day! Tom woke up at 5:45 AM and put the remainder of our stuff in the truck. Then we went out to the park at 6:30 AM for a run. That is the earliest I have ever been out to the park. We only ran for 15 minutes today though. Then we came back home, hooked up the boat and said goodbye to Grand Pappy Frank. Then it was time to go. I jumped up into the van and sat in the passenger seat and we were off.
This is a big adventure and none of us are quite sure how I will react. Tom is, but, nobody else is sure. Well, nobody needs to have worried. I flopped down and went to sleep and was quiet until just before the Coquihalla toll booth. Tom’s truck suddenly shifted out of cruise control and it began to slow down. Tom’s heart rate and anxiety went way up, thinking something was wrong with the truck. At that point I started barking. It was over in a few moments when Tom realized the truck was ok. When he calmed down, so did I.
We stopped at the toll booth rest stop and Tom got me out to stretch my legs and have a pee. I was getting lots of compliments from people in the parking lot and Tom was getting lots of laughs with his Sheepdog Patrol T-shirt. After a few minutes, it was time to get back on the road. I jumped back into the truck and this time laid flat on the back seat and promptly fell asleep again. Tom said I was so quiet that he looked back a few times to make sure I was there.
Before long we were in Barriere. Tom gassed up the boat and we continued on our journey. The next big test for me was soon to come. The pavement ended and we were on a bumpy gravel road. Initially I did not react, but finally I could stand it no more and started to bark. The barking only lasted about 10 minutes and then I settled down. I lay across the front seat and the cooler with my head on Tom’s lap. With him stroking my ears, I was fine.
Suddenly, we were there. The weather was cloudy, windy and with a light rain, so we did not launch the boat. Before long we pulled into the cabin and Tom started to unload the truck. I immediately began exploring, sniffing everything in and around the cabin and just checking out everything I could find.
Guess what I found on my explorations? There is a lake here, and I don’t care if it is raining. It is swimming time. Into the water I went and was frolicking up and down the beach. Yahoo is this ever great. Tom didn’t get a chance to film my first entry into the lake, but he did get some video of me in the water. I am completely free to explore off-leash. It’s awesome.
Tom got the truck unloaded and then joined me in the water. He said he was putting in the intake valve for the water system, but, I think he just wanted to go swimming with me.
We then went over and said hello to our neighbours and friends, Perry and Teri. I like them a lot. I even shook water on them and then fell asleep lying on Perry’s feet. We caught up on some of the news from around the area and then headed back to our cabin. Perry said that the weather has been sunny and hot the last couple of days and the little bit of rain we got today was somewhat welcome.
I’m at Tom’s favourite place in the whole world and I am with my favourite person in the world (well, except for Renee of course). What could be better? They say it’s a dog’s life, but, I will tell you, it doesn’t get any better than this.
